Scrabble Corporate Challenge

I just completed working on my first project as an internship!

Last Wednesday we had our fifth annual Scrabble Corporate Challenge, which was held at the Design Exchange. I was responsible for the silent auction as well as coordinating all the volunteers. Over the last two months I put together over 20 silent auction packages, which included a golf membership to Georgian Bay Club, numerous ticket vouchers to CANSTAGE, Shaw Festival, and Stratford, hockey tickets, and a Sony Digital Reader. As the volunteer co-ordinator I created a poster to attract volunteers at Humber, and put together the volunteer information packages. We had over 25 volunteers that night for the event!
<---(i'm on the left, glasses. with a few of our volunteers)

It was a great learning experience and I had so much fun working on it! My supervisor and I were the two running the show (We even had those cool clear walkie talkies). Citytv was there and we gained coverage that night on the 11 o'clock news. I've attached a link to a blog posting, you'll see photos and what not from our event.

Just updating. I had a lot of fun, and wanted to share :D

Staying late in my jeans!

Hey everyone,

Just wanted to say that I hope everyone is loving their internships!! From what I've read it seems like everyone seems to have secured a great placement! (squeek: go humber rep!) lol.

Just a note about corporate shock....so true...I intern with the Progressive Conservative party and you would think it's business dress 9-5 ....NOPE!!...try jeans and a sweater 8:30- 6:30 everyday!!! Only when the house is sitting do we have to dress appropriately..which fortunately is now...feel bad for those York U kids...I can't imagine extending our program.

oh!...and my body is totally still adjusting to the 6:30 a.m. wake up ...(that part is NOT fun :( )

P.S. I have media lists coming out from every angle...would like to create a MASTER media list.... once and for all!!!!!

Look forward to reading more blogs from YOUS GUYS...LMFAO!!! haha maria...u still kill me...

<3 ROZI <3

P.P.S For those interns that are not getting paid or receiving a stipend here is some advice:
1. PACK YOUR LUNCH EVERYDAY!
2. DON'T DRIVE TO WORK UNLESS YOU ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO (PARKING IS EXPENSIVE)
3. LOOK IN YOUR BOSS'S DESK FOR SPARE CHANGE ...(just kidding)

Well I would first love to say that I totally agree, this is such a great idea and I love hearing about everyone's current experiences in the many different fields we 're experimenting in.

Im enjoying the corporate side of life interning at CTVglobemedia. I would have never expected to find myself working in the Much Music Building on Queen St, without a dull moment in site. My main position is working within the Corporate Affairs department, specifically focused on ALL of CTVglobe's sponsorships and doing various tasks with Much and MTV.

Now, i know ur thinking CTVglobe.. Probably strict, uptight, business suits all day ... ummmmm NEVER !!!! I must say I was totally shocked by the corporate culture. I could not have asked for a better placement. We have the options to wear jeans everyday of the week, given that you look presentable and there are no meeting scheduled. Everyone walks around just so happy and randomly excited to see you as if you've been friends for a million years.

Its just wonderful to see all the great events that are out there, going on everyday in Toronto. Going through endless amounts of sponsorship requests is really fun until the director says "DENIED".. I totally feel the burn for them and almost just want to go to all the events just to show my support for such great organizations that need so much help.

On the other hand, (or should I say the second layer of the corporate cake) I spend my Wednesdays, screening Video on Trial and random skanky music videos to decide if it should air or not, along with the tedious task of responding to all the Much Music mail where ppl just ask the most random questions and beg to the Jonas Brothers.

The hours are pretty good, 8:30 to 4 pm (yes guys.. I do actually make it to work on time lol). I would say that yes school has prepared us for the roles we are currently in but no matter what, working outside of the class room is completely different from getting writing tips from Elizabeth Duncan.

xoxo,

Hasina Jo :)

Health and the City... Err... Country!

I agree with KB.. Good work Seb! :)

Ok, so...Where to begin?
Well, I am interning at Southlake Regional Health Centre in Newmarket. (Just north of the city for those of you who don’t know where that is!) I don't really know what to say except that, Southlake is a great organization – I definitely recommend Healthcare Communications to anyone interested in an exciting career that pays well, has pretty good hours (as long as we don’t have another S.A.R.S outbreak, or something of that nature!!) & for someone who wants to mingle with some pretty fascinating people! (HELLO DR. MCSTEAMY!!!!) ….NO I do NOT plan to ride the elevator with you at the same time everyday! Uhhh…….Sorry WHAT??!?! Haha… I’m kidding!

No, but it is great! I will admit it’s sad at times. It’s so upsetting to see hundreds of cancer patients (including children) EVERY SINGLE day. There I am, reading Cosmo in the lunchroom with my co-workers talking about boys and Britney Spears… and then I see all these sweet elderly people walking to get their weekly treatment. I spoke with a man in the hall the other day and he said to me, “Oh well my wife & I will be here next Wednesday.. You see, we both have cancer, so we come together.” My heart snapped in half. Definitely gives you a whole new perspective of how sick our community really is. … ANYWAYS… enough about that!

I didn’t expect a hospital to have as many fun & exciting events going on as they do, & it’s mesmerizing to hear about all of the newest procedures available!!
Also, I’ve noticed it’s similar to the SPORTS sector… reporters will come to you for the story!!
I actually worked here this past summer and throughout the semester, so in a way I missed out on the EXCITEMENT of a brand new place to intern at – but that’s ok!!! That’s why I’m so interested in knowing how you are all doing & where you are ETC!!

MiChe.

What's up KB?

Thought I would start off saying that this is an excellent idea. I am all over it.

I am interning at Frontier College Foundation, a non-profit organization that raisies money for Frontier College. The college provides programs for youth, children and adults who have difficulty reading and writing. The foundation and college are not that well known across the nation, but the opportunites they provide to canadians is tremendous.

Yesterday I was involved in one of their events, The 18th Annual Bonspiel (curling event). I did NOT enjoy waking up at 5:30 a.m. but I am glad I was able to help out with it.

So far I am enjoying my internship. The hours are fantastic! I arrive at nine and leave at five. In fact last friday our exec let us leave an hour early because of all of our hard work.

So I thought I would just share a little bit of info on what I am up to as an intern. If anyone out there knows of a company/place/person that would love to donate a prize to an upcoming silent auction I am preparing let me know!

Become a Green Intern

We all know that "Going Green" is a global initiative taking place in not only the PR industry, but all industries.

In the two weeks I have been with The Fairmont Royal York hotel, I myself have become quite passionate with how a company's green initiatives can be used to conserve energy but how it can be used to brand everything from hotels to water bottles.

"Going Green" is a trend that can be used to show how proactive a company has become and how it plans to stay that way.

Myself and the PR team at The Fairmont Royal York have been using TweetDeck and OneMillionActs of Green.com as an outlet to display our proactive ways and to brand our hotels.

I know you are all fully aware of the "Going Green" phenomenon, so don't think I'm trying to teach you anything. I'm only saying, "Don't forget about it!"

So join me and many others. To contact my profile or The Fairmont Royal York Green Team profile visit these links:

What is 9 - 5 like?

I remember our beloved Shari, and a few profs, telling us how PR is not a 9-5...So true! For me, at least. Since being at Cossette, I have yet to leave before 6pm. In fact, i've been there until 8pm or later on five separate occasions!

Not sure how it works with you guys, but at the very least Cossette offers to expense your dinner and/or cab fare if you stay after 7pm.

How many of you guys are doing media lists? I swear I just want to dedicate one week to create the ultimate media list...with every outlet imaginable, every beat and for every city, so I never have to do one again!

I will say this though, loving the casual dress code. Huge plus...love my jeans!
